<p>We&#8217;ll review the importance of a quick lay-in when doing plein air paintings.</p>
<p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2231 size-full" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709205503/Start-A-Painting-Title-Art.jpg" alt="Plein air painting" width="1026" height="838" data-pin-description="Tips on how to start a plein air painting | Tips from former Disney artist and fine artist Donald Towns | #pleinair #tips #howtopaint #paint #fineart" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709205503/Start-A-Painting-Title-Art.jpg 1026w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709205503/Start-A-Painting-Title-Art.jpg 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709205503/Start-A-Painting-Title-Art-300x245.jpg 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709205503/Start-A-Painting-Title-Art-768x627.jpg 768w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709205503/Start-A-Painting-Title-Art-1024x836.jpg 1024w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709205503/Start-A-Painting-Title-Art-700x572.jpg 700w" sizes="(max-width: 1026px) 100vw, 1026px" /></p>
<p>Hello all you art lovers out there. Today I’m going to give you an example of how I start some of my plein air pieces. This particular painting was done at Caesar Chavez National Monument.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2227 aligncenter" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709183907/Paint-out-blog-217x300.jpg" alt="" width="217" height="300" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709183907/Paint-out-blog-217x300.jpg 217w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709183907/Paint-out-blog.jpg 274w" sizes="(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px" /></p>
<p>It represents several of the plein air paintings I actually start. So check out my starting process (watch the video), maybe there’s something you can learn from it. Mainly I want you to focus on how my lay-in is very quick.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4v6hGOJMv6M" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I have a tendency to work from back to front with things that are furthest distance then come closer. There are time where as you may have seen on some of my demos, I tend to put the brighter colors in and then the darker colors. For this plein air painting I&#8217;m doing the sky first.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2222 size-medium" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182014/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.38.18-PM-300x169.png" alt="hand painting sky" width="300" height="169" data-pin-description="How To Start A Plein Air Painting | Tips from Donald Towns Art | #pleinair #painting #tips #howto #howtopaint" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182014/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.38.18-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182014/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.38.18-PM.png 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182014/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.38.18-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182014/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.38.18-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182014/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.38.18-PM-700x394.png 700w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182014/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.38.18-PM-1400x787.png 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>I’m going to build up some of the foliage to help give me depth of field as I go. As I lay more information in, I can determine whether I have enough depth or too much depth in some situations. But I start sky, build some foliage in front, lay-in the lighter color greens,</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2223 aligncenter" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182052/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.39.56-PM-300x168.png" alt="" width="300" height="168" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182052/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.39.56-PM-300x168.png 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182052/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.39.56-PM.png 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182052/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.39.56-PM-768x429.png 768w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182052/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.39.56-PM-1024x572.png 1024w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182052/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.39.56-PM-700x391.png 700w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182052/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.39.56-PM-1400x782.png 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>I get the shadowed area on the right hand side then go to the foreground elements to help me begin to build the basic foundation of values that I&#8217;m seeing.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2224 aligncenter" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182132/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.40.51-PM-300x167.png" alt="" width="300" height="167" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182132/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.40.51-PM-300x167.png 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182132/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.40.51-PM.png 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182132/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.40.51-PM-768x428.png 768w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182132/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.40.51-PM-1024x571.png 1024w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182132/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.40.51-PM-700x390.png 700w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182132/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.40.51-PM-1400x781.png 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>That’s how I want to think of it. Laying in roughly, not fine detail, just quick elements so that I can build my plein air painting as I go. Putting the color that I think will help me establish the final colors that will come together eventually.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2225 aligncenter" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182211/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.41.49-PM-300x167.png" alt="" width="300" height="167" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182211/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.41.49-PM-300x167.png 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182211/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.41.49-PM.png 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182211/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.41.49-PM-768x428.png 768w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182211/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.41.49-PM-1024x571.png 1024w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182211/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.41.49-PM-700x390.png 700w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182211/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.41.49-PM-1400x781.png 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>It will change as I began to fill in more and more of the details. But the basic background, middle ground, foreground elements that’s going to establish what I need as I move into the detail aspects of the plein air  painting.</p>
<p>Here I’m trying to get more of the middle and foreground area colors developed as close to what I’m visually interpreting as possible.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-2226 aligncenter" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182248/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.42.48-PM-300x167.png" alt="" width="300" height="167" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182248/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.42.48-PM-300x167.png 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182248/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.42.48-PM.png 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182248/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.42.48-PM-768x427.png 768w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182248/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.42.48-PM-1024x569.png 1024w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182248/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.42.48-PM-700x389.png 700w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709182248/Screen-Shot-2018-07-09-at-5.42.48-PM-1400x778.png 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>Then putting in the lighter tree foliage now and building the values around it.</p>
<p>When completed you see how roughly layed in this is. You can still see the loose brushstrokes. This is a good foundation for me to carry over. Good loose tree information.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2215 size-medium" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180408/Rough-Layin-224x300.jpg" alt="Lay-in painting in progress" width="224" height="300" data-pin-description="Learn how to do a quick lay-in for plein air paintings | Donald Towns Art Tips | #arttips #paintingtechniques #howtopaint #artist #fineart #pleinair" /></p>
<p>Now I build the middle ground trees in the painting. Putting in additional branches, structure for trees on the left side.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2211" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180317/As-I-go-blog-300x233.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="233" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180317/As-I-go-blog-300x233.jpg 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180317/As-I-go-blog.jpg 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180317/As-I-go-blog.jpg 636w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-2210 size-medium" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180311/Additional-Branches-300x219.jpg" alt="brush painting landscape" width="300" height="219" data-pin-description="Learn plein air painting techniques from popular artist Donald Towns | #pleinairpainting #paintingtechniques #howtopaint #pleinair #tips #fineart" srcset="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180311/Additional-Branches-300x219.jpg 300w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180311/Additional-Branches.jpg 600w, https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180311/Additional-Branches.jpg 661w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here is more leafy shapes building over top of the first lay-in. The rocks more detailed.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2213 aligncenter" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709180332/Pining-Foe-Life-before-end-224x300.jpg" alt="" width="224" height="300" /></p>
<p>This is how the final looks.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2221 size-medium" src="https://offload-s3-dtowns-wordpress.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/20180709181030/Pining-For-Life-224x300.jpg" alt="plein air painting of trees" width="224" height="300" data-pin-description="Learn techniques for plein air painting from former Disney artist and American fine artist Donald Towns | #fineart #disneyartist #pleinair #pleinairpaintings #painttechniques #paintingtips" /></p>
<p>This is how I would approach my first lay-in and build from there.</p>
<p>I hope you found this helpful. In the future I’ll show you the full plein air painting approach from beginning to completion. But my focus was the lay-in today. Happy painting.</p>
